The breed is renowned for its compact size and unique temperament. These dogs are not intended for hard work or any special service, but can be used as therapy dogs. They are very intelligent and can learn tricks quickly. However, they have a stubborn streak and hence can be difficult to housebreak. They get irritated when someone teases them and can be fairly dog-aggressive. For this reason, they are not recommended for children and should not be trusted with other dogs, especially those of larger size.

Coat colors and patterns vary tremendously in these dogs; no color is considered to be a disqualification, but solid colors are more popular. Blue, silver and chocolate colors are very rare and valuable. The eyes and nose are usually brown; blonde dogs may have pink noses. According to the AKC standard, there exist two varieties within the breed: the smooth coats and the long coats, but in the UK they are considered to be separate breeds.
