Long Haired Chihuahua

The Long Haired Chihuahua, also known as the “long-coated” Chihuahua is just one of the two varieties of the breed. As to its basic physical characteristics, it is absolutely identical to the short-haired Chihuahua, and both varieties are equally popular among dog fanciers. It is not uncommon for litters to contain both long-coated and smooth-coated puppies, as they are genetically related.

Long Haired Chihuahuas have long silky hair, which forms tufts on the ears. Long-coated dogs require daily grooming. These dogs should not be bathed too frequently, because this can result in poor skin oiling and shabby look. It is recommended to bathe Chihuahuas once every month. Chihuahuas are average shedders, and they usually shed twice a year.

Long Haired Chihuahuas are not very different from their smooth-coated brothers. They are vivacious, active and protective. These dogs appreciate various sorts of physical activity, and they should not be confined to the house. They enjoy walking, and some dogs may learn interesting tricks. Despite their small size, they are no less intelligent than most other dogs. They are not meant for any service or hard work because of their small size and fragile bodies.

Both Short Haired and Long Haired Chihuahuas are superb companions. They tend to be loyal to all members of one family, although many dogs bond with one particular person. Chihuahuas can be excessively protective and jealous around their owners. They show anxiety when there is a stranger in the house. Chihuahuas are not recommended for families with small children. Chihuahuas can be short with small children, as they do not tolerate teasing. Besides, interaction with young children is more likely to result in injuries.

Chihuahuas can occur in all possible colors, except merle. This is true of both smooth-coated and Long Haired Chihuahuas. They come in both solid and mixed colors, as standards do not impose any restrictions on color patterns. Merle has been ruled out because it is related to a gene that causes serious genetic diseases and deformities. For this reason, merle Chihuahuas should not be bred.

Chihuahuas stand 6-10 inches high at the shoulder. They are the smallest dogs in the world. The Chihuahua breed originated in the Chihuahua state of Mexico. The history of this breed can be traced back to the times of ancient Toltecs, who used to breed the Techichi dog – the most likely progenitor of the modern Chihuahua, as it looked very similar to it. The Long Haired Chihuahua has always been common, and some Chihuahua lovers prefer this variety.
