In general, this is a healthy and long-lived dog. Many serious genetic diseases have been bred out successfully. These dogs live 15-17 years, and they are renowned for their endurance and thirst for knowledge and activity. They are very sweet companions, and can be very protective around their loved ones. They feel anxious when there are visitors in the house, and can be extremely wary of alien dogs. This breed is not recommended for inexperienced owners, because these dogs can be willful and stubborn at times. This behavior requires consecutive and patient correction, and no rough methods can be used to deal with it.

Some owners of these dogs are very intent on breeding their bitches just because they love these dogs and want another one or want the children to experience the miracle of birth. Reputable breeders don’t recommend breeding the dog if you don’t have experience. This breed may have many complications with delivery and the bitch may even die. Puppies often get lodged in the birth canal or may be born prematurely. You should be prepared to care for the puppies if the bitch dies or cannot raise the litter herself.
