The ancestors of the dog came from the state of the same name in Mexico. This breed was well known among the Aztecs as well as the Toltecs, and was thought to possess a godly power. That was an ancient Techichi breed and it was very different from its modern descendant. Those animals were believed to be capable of steering the souls of the dead through the underworld, which has been proven by a lot of their skeletons that have been found in ancient graves. Their modern descendants enjoy world wide popularity.

The dogs of this breed are rather healthy in spite of their small size. They live up to 14-17 years and remain active and lively. The peculiar feature of these dogs is that they have a soft spot on the top of the head called molera. Aztecs considered this molera to be a sign of purity and worshipped such dogs; today, some lay people and even vets consider it to be a sign of hydrocephalia.
