The dogs of this breed can be smooth coats and long coats. Both types can occur in the litter and there is no breeding distinction made between them in the USA. In the UK, they are considered to be two breeds and are not interbred. Somehow, long-coated dogs tend to be more loyal than smooth-coated species. These dogs are very easy to care for. The long-coated require daily grooming, and the smooth-coated are usually content with occasional grooming. Bathing should not be too frequent, because too much shampoo affects the skin and can result in itching.

These dogs are like children and remain active for the most of their lives (12-15 years.) With their apple-dome skull and large luminous eyes, the dogs can wear a remarkably human expression at times and are always people-oriented and sociable. However, they can be a little wayward and tend to be fairly dog-aggressive. They are reserved with strangers and should not be trusted with small and poorly behaved children.
