The breed's origin is uncertain but it is called after the state of Mexico. These dogs are unique, because they are the only ingenious to the Western hemisphere. It is the only natural toy breed and the smallest dog in the world. The ancestors of the breed were popular among the Toltecs and the Aztecs who worshipped them and used for food. Since these dogs have a soft spot on the head (molera,) they were presumed to have the power of leading the dead through the underworld.
