Purebred dogs measure 6-9 inches high at the withers, and weigh 2-6 pounds. There is no so called ‘teacup’ type of the breed, and breeders claiming to have such dogs for sale should be avoided. Very small dogs are probably the result of a birth abnormality, and they are very fragile and delicate. This breed is famous for its vivid and saucy appearance and merry temperament. The dog does not like it when there are guests in the house and hates other dogs, except those of the same breed. These dogs thrive on interaction and company and are not intended for solitary life.

Crossbreeding of purebred dogs of different breeds results in mixed dogs. Such animals cannot be registered to take part in shows for purebreds. Often they are abandoned and found stray in the streets and in rescue organizations. They should be spayed or neutered prior to adoption. Such dogs are small and often very curious-looking combining the features of two different breeds. The personality of such animals is usually friendly; they take the best traits from their ancestors and are smart, intelligent, loving and adaptable to an apartment living.
